When Your Life Is In Jeopardy…

I have pondered over this and struggled with it, and I just cannot come up with a Mac or computing angle. This e-zine is about the personal computing experience, and all I have is a personal experience to relate. It has no computing angle. But it is a good story, I hope.

A week or so after this issue goes to press, I will be taping an episode of the TV quiz show Jeopardy! Probably. Maybe more than one. It depends on how it goes. I’ll include a note in a few months when we get closer to the airdate. In the meantime, I thought maybe a few of the strategies I’ve used to prepare for this would be helpful for you, in some part of your life.

For me, getting on Jeopardy! is the result of some of these ideas. I may not have articulated them to myself all along, or to others, but they have been there. I have one chance in three of winning a game. I like those odds. If I don’t win a game, I know I will learn something I can tell one of my other game-show friends that will help them if they get on. That’s how it works. We help each other with lists of things to study, suggestions about what to wear, and encouragement. Then one day all the goodwill you’ve shown to others comes back and bites you on the rear. In a good way.

Something to look forward to, maybe.

Onward.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I was on back in 2001, and it truly was a terrific experience. It took a while for me to deal with the fact that I didn't do as well as I had hoped, but with time comes perspective, and I'm really glad I did it. Lifelong dream come true. (Well, except for the not winning part!)

P.S. Follow the news *religiously* from here until your tape date, including international news. I swear the only reason that I got my final (name the only Hindu kingdom in the world) was because I had been reading up on it when the crown prince massacred his whole family. (What is Nepal?)

How does one get on Jeopardy?

One gets on Jeopardy by taking a test of show-type questions, 50 of them, with 8 seconds each to answer. A passing score is unofficially 35. Then you play a mock game with a signalling device and more clues, and they ask you stuff about yourself, to see what kind of stage presence you have. About 1000 people pass the test each year, and usually about 400 get to play each season. This season it was only 250 due to a special tournament where they brought back past champions. You can find more information at http://www.jeopardy.com.
